Glynneath Male Voice Choir

Charity No. 506654

The Choir was formed in 1962 under Mr. David Harrison and was soon performing at concerts, and entering competitions at which it met with a level of success that belied its recent formation. Following Mr. Harrison, the Choir were taken forward by a small succession  of lady conductors, and in March 1994 came under the baton of Mr. Gareth Sims,  during whose time the Choir were placed Third in their class at the National Eisteddfod, and  placed First in the Miners’ Eisteddfod at Porthcawl. At this time Mrs. Julie Sims became Accompanist to the Choir,  and Mr. Gerwyn Harries Assistant Musical Director.

The Choir has sung  by invitation at the Royal Albert Hall on eight separate occasions and has recorded a CD entitled “There is a Land”, which is an entertaining mixture of Welsh favourites , popular modern, and spirituals.

Apart from venues too numerous to mention in Wales and England the Choir has sung in many countries, including Barbados, Brittany, France, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland.

In January 2001 the Choir toured with  Opera Box Office and gave seven performances of Alun Hoddinot's opera, "Tower". Both choir and conductor received excellent reviews. Then In October 2002 to Prague  to perform two  concerts in the heart of the beautiful old town.

On  returning, Mr. Gerwyn Harris became Musical Director and in 2007 Ms Angharad Jayne Davies, currently studying on the Trinity College degree programme, became  Accompanist.

Recently the Choir has toured to the Costa del Sol, County  Mayo,  the pretty town of Delft in Holland and last year gave a concert in the fine old church in Kircudbright in the south of Scotland, and in Baldock, Hertfordshire, both of which  concerts raised considerable sums for named charities.

Apart from its commendable history of fund-raising,  the Choir sings by request at weddings, birthdays, christenings  and other occasions.

Practice is every Monday and Thursday from 7 pm  to 9 pm at Glynneath Rugby Club. Anyone interested should contact the Secretary or Chairman using the "Contact Us" link on the top of each page, or just come along on practice nights, where you  will be sure of a warm and enthusiastic welcome. And do not think you cannot sing. The Choir will prove to you that you can. Honest.
